* Somos * Quilt!

The Somos Quilt
for the Somos Children's Village
in Guatemala
is birthed!

This afternoon
Sunday 5 March 2017
the final stitches were stitched.

The seed for this quilt
was planted on Thursday 26 September 2013 (!)
when I attended a fund raising event in Vancouver
for the Somos Children's Village,
an eco-sustainable community
for at-risk mothers and children in Guatemala,
and my heart was deeply touched.
On their 'ways to help' wish list
I saw that quilts for the children's beds
are required
and I knew instantly that I would make one.
I have many years of sewing experience
but no quilting experience.
No matter,
I knew the quilt would show me the way
and it did!
This has been an epic project
of Love & learning.

I've posted about this quilt

shown on our living room rug
i'm taking the photo from on top of a stool!
the perspective skews the shape of the quilt a bit
it is a straight rectangle
the underside fabric is pink flannel with white stars

as soon as the quilt was completed
there was a sense of how to pack it
for travel to its new home in Guatemala
a draw string bag perhaps
oh, a pillow case!
which serves a dual purpose

and so, a pillow case was born from the remnants of the quilt!

the quilt folds up and fits in perfectly!

so much learning has happened during this creative process
many new skills gained
new tools acquired
and discoveries of what is enjoyed and loved
i'm realizing that the favourite squares
created with these hands
(i so love the squares created by everyone else
and couldn't possibly choose a favourite!)
are these three
the top photo
the one above
and one below
a square made of 9 smaller squares
a feng shui bagua
pure delight to create!

the quilt is made of 130 squares
of 100% cotton
some of the fabric is new, some is thrifted, some is re-purposed
it's the first real quilt i've made

including myself
27 people contributed to this quilt
from Canada, the USA, England, Spain

deep bows of Gratitude & Love

maybe one of these sweethearts will be the quilt's recipient!

Creating hope and building a future:  IT TAKES A VILLAGE

p.s. after the quilting, the clean-up!
and the next step
some have asked to see (and touch) the quilt,
which will happen,
and then figure out how to get it to Somos!

p.p.s  the photos give a very limited sense of the quilt
it has a lovely soft squishy feel to it
and a sense of wanting to snuggle up in it
like a cat
do the knead knead knead thing
purr purr purr
turn round and round and round
and settle into
a happy relaxed deep nap
