Project Somos Children's Village!

My heart was deeply touched last night at a fundraising event here in Vancouver. We gathered to celebrate and give to Project Somos Children's Village ~ a project to build a sustainable village for orphaned and abandoned children in Guatemala. 

Thanks to my brother's enthusiasm and generosity, we were able to attend this heart warming event. He phoned very excitedly a few days ago to tell us about Project Somos and invite us to join him at their 'Grand Fiesta'. As soon as I visited their website my heart said yes. On their 'Get Involved' page, I noticed a request for quilters to make quilts for the children's beds. (The village will house 49 orphaned children in 7 family homes with 7 local Guatemalan foster moms. So, 49 quilts will be needed. Two of the homes are now built and are fully ready to receive children. In addition, this village will also house and care for abandoned dogs! The children will help care for the dogs as part of their healing process.) I sew, but have never made a quilt. I know I'll be making one! Late last night after we got home, so happy and filled with hope, I went to bed researching quilt making and dreaming of designs for children's quilts.

I'm very grateful for meeting Heather Knox and Greg Kemp (the founders of this incredible project) and seeing this big L O V E in action. So many have given their time and money for these beautiful children of Guatemala. The generosity last night was profound. Piles of money was donated! The children's village now has the funds for a solar hot water system! It takes a world village to build a local village.
